2022 Paradise Valley Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest

Essay Competition:

Students attending 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade are invited to submit an essay on this year’s theme. There will be one winner picked from each grade level. Winners will be announced on December 15th. The winners will be given a trophy and gift card during the Paradise Valley Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in the Town Hall on Monday, January 17th, 2022. Winners and their family are invited and encouraged to attend.

Essay Topic:
“Seeing Hope in Changing Times”

Requirements:

The essay should be two, full single-side pages. The font should be of Times family and 12 pt., double line spaced, with a 1” margins. Student name, school and grade should be on the first page of essay. Please save essay as a PDF or .doc format.

Deadline:

Submission deadline of the essay is December 1, 2021.
Please upload the file onto the www.MLKParadiseValley.org website. Each grade level will have one winner.
Finalists will be notified by December 15, 2021.

Essays will be judged on:

Relevance to the topic; content; and clarity
Focus and Coherence
– From introduction to conclusion, the ideas are related and well supported.
Organization – Writer uses smooth transitions, and ideas are clear.
Development of Ideas – Writer uses specific details to develop ideas.
Voice – Writer engages the reader with choice of words, and writer’s unique personality comes through.
Conventions – Writer uses correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

With submission of your essay, you are approving the essay to be published and used in promotions, along with the student’s name, grade and school. You are also committing to the original quality of the paper. Any papers that are not original will be automatically disqualified.
